Monkeypod trees grow in tropical and sub-tropical climes. This piece came from southwestern Florida where many trees were removed by the force of hurricane winds and/or insurance companies seeking to decrease property and casualty liabilities. The yellow sapwood of the tree was formed at the point where a crotch was formed. When a crotch or a “V” is formed in the tree, the cellular structure creates what woodworkers call a “feather” where the separation occurs. This highly figured feature is considered very desirable by collectors.
