We had a display of turned Box Elder in the Exhibition: Naturally Gifted in the Focus Gallery of the Folk Art Center in Asheville, NC from August 11 to November 6, 2018.  This Box Elder Tree was harvested by loggers under a reforestation permit issued by the North Carolina Department Natural Resources in Rutherfordton, NC.  The red coloring in the wood is the residue left by a beetle which takes up residence in the Box Elder Tree.  The seasonal rise and fall of the sap in the tree carries the red coloring throughout the tree.   After drying and sanding it was finished with several coats of lacquer.
